Evaluating source credibility: claim, evidence, expertise and independence

🔎 A polished page is not automatically a reliable source

Credibility is not a permanent label attached to a website. It depends on the specific claim, the author’s relevant expertise, the evidence provided, editorial processes, incentives and whether independent sources converge.

A lateral-reading workflow

1. Pause before sharing or citing.
2. Identify the exact claim and whether it is fact, interpretation or prediction.
3. Leave the page to investigate the author, organization and original evidence.
4. Find independent, preferably primary or authoritative, corroboration.
5. Check publication date, event date, corrections and whether context has changed.

Evidence quality

A screenshot of a chart is weaker than the underlying dataset and method. A quoted expert should have expertise relevant to that claim. A large sample can still be biased; a small qualitative study can be useful for mechanisms but not prevalence.

⚠️ Independence matters

Ten articles repeating one press release are not ten independent confirmations. Trace citations back to their origin and disclose conflicts of interest without assuming that funding alone proves a claim false.
