Sentence stress and information focus: make meaning audible

🔊 Not every word receives equal prominence

In a neutral sentence, content words such as main verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs often carry stronger stress. Function words such as articles, auxiliaries and prepositions are commonly less prominent. This pattern helps listeners locate important information.

Neutral and contrastive focus

• Mai SENT the report can correct the idea that she only drafted it.
• Mai sent the REPORT contrasts the item with another document.
• Mai sent the report to LAN contrasts the recipient.

The words stay the same, but the location of nuclear stress changes what the speaker presents as the key contrast.

Weak forms

In unstressed positions, words such as to, can, and, a may use a reduced vowel in many varieties of English. Reduction should serve intelligibility and natural information flow; learners do not need to erase every vowel or copy one accent.

⚠️ Grammar does not determine stress mechanically

A function word can receive strong stress when contrasted: I said TO Lan, not FROM Lan. Context, correction and speaker intention can override the neutral pattern. Listen to complete phrases and mark the intended focus before practising.
