Present perfect and past simple: connect time reference to meaning

🕒 Grammar follows the time viewpoint

Use the past simple for an event located in a finished past period: I visited Hue in 2024. Use the present perfect for past experience or a situation with a present connection when no finished past time is specified: I have visited Hue twice.

Useful patterns

since + starting point; for + duration: She has lived here since 2022 / for four years.
already, yet, just, ever, never often occur with the present perfect when the viewpoint is “up to now”.
yesterday, last week, in 2024, two days ago locate events in finished past time and normally take the past simple.

State or finished action?

She has lived here for four years normally means she still lives here. She lived here for four years presents that residence as a finished past period. Context, not the word for alone, determines the tense.

⚠️ Do not combine conflicting time frames

In standard usage, avoid I have met him yesterday. Say I met him yesterday, or remove the finished time: I have met him before.
